Abuja rainstorm traffic disruption hits Nyanya–Keffi expressway as Kugbo Bus Terminal damage blocks roads and strands commuters for hours

A torrential rainstorm on Tuesday caused severe traffic disruption along the Nyanya–Keffi Expressway in Abuja after significant structural damage was recorded at the Kugbo Bus Terminal, leaving commuters stranded for hours and forcing emergency clearance efforts.

Rainstorm traffic disruption began after strong winds accompanying the downpour tore apart sections of the terminal’s roofing, sending debris onto the highway and obstructing the movement of vehicles along the busy corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory with Nasarawa State.

Motorists experienced prolonged delays as congestion built rapidly, with traffic grinding to a near standstill in several sections of the route.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that some vehicles were struck by falling debris, heightening concerns over safety during the storm.

Residents and passersby were seen assisting in clearing the road, working alongside stranded motorists to remove scattered materials in an attempt to restore partial flow.

Their efforts helped ease some pressure, although movement remained slow into the evening hours.

The stretch around the Abuja Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre, operated by the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, was identified as the worst affected area, with gridlock extending across adjacent lanes of the expressway.

The Kugbo Bus Terminal, a recently developed transport hub, sustained visible damage that raised questions about its resilience to extreme weather conditions.

Authorities had yet to issue a detailed assessment at the time of reporting.

A notable aspect of the incident was the extended duration of the disruption, as commuters reported being stuck for several hours without clear diversion routes, underscoring the vulnerability of key transport links during heavy rainfall.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution when approaching the affected corridor, as traffic continued to crawl and recovery efforts were ongoing late into the day.
