Following the celebration of the World Teachers Day, the Nigerian federal government has agreed to pay for every student studying education in all public universities across the nation.
Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, announced the development prior to the celebration in bid to encourage students into venturing into teaching.
He claimed the government has approved the payment of N75,000 per semester for every student studying education.
Students enrolled in the National Certificate in Education (NCE) program would also receive N50,000, according to Adamu, who was represented by Sonny Echono, the ministry’s permanent secretary.
He also stated that his ministry will work with state governments to ensure that people who completed their study at public tertiary institutions would be automatically employed upon graduation.
The move, according to the minister, is part of President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts to draw the greatest minds in the country to teaching.
“Undergraduate students of B.Ed / B.A. Ed/ BSc. Ed in Public institutions are to receive stipends of N75,000.00 per semester while NCE students will get N50,000.00 as stipends per semester,” he said.
“Federal Government should find the modality through which respective states’ governments could provide automatic employment for NCE graduates at Basic Education level.”
Adamu said the ministry would also liaise with education ministries across the federation to identify respective courses of study required by each state.
“Beneficiaries must attend public institutions only and sign a bond to serve their state for five (5) years on graduation,” he added.
