Davido sparks backlash over Oyetola ‘desperate politician’ remark

Davido’s criticism of former governor Gboyega Oyetola ignites heated reactions online, with users questioning the singer’s political interventions

Nigerian music star Davido has come under intense criticism on social media after describing former Gboyega Oyetola as “the most desperate politician in the world” in a post shared early Tuesday.

Davido made the remark on X at about 1:10 a.m. on 19 May 2026, writing: “The most desperate politician in the world is Gboyega Oyetola, very embarrassing.”

The post quickly attracted widespread attention, generating hundreds of thousands of views and prompting a wave of responses from supporters and critics alike.

Several users accused the singer of only speaking out on political matters when issues affect members of the Adeleke family.

Critics argued that Davido has remained largely silent on broader national concerns, including insecurity, economic hardship and governance challenges.

One user claimed the singer only comments on politics when “his dancing uncle is not getting his way,” while another questioned why Davido had chosen to publicly criticise Oyetola but had not been equally vocal on other national issues.

Other commenters defended Oyetola, noting that the former governor is not currently contesting an election.

Some also argued that political leadership in Osun State should not be viewed through the lens of a single family rivalry.

The online exchange reflects the increasingly prominent role celebrities play in Nigeria’s political conversations, where public figures often face scrutiny not only for their views but also for the timing and consistency of their interventions.

Neither Oyetola nor his representatives had publicly responded to the singer’s comment as of the time of filing this report.
