PDP lawmaker Anthony Adepoju accuses APC of undermining democracy after National Assembly retained manual transmission of election results

Adepoju, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Character Commission, made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television.
His reaction follows the decision by the National Assembly to retain manual transmission of election results amid heated debates over the Electoral Act Amendment bill ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Proceedings in the House of Representatives reportedly turned rowdy as lawmakers clashed over a motion to rescind the bill.
According to Adepoju, the development undermines public trust in Nigeria’s democracy.
“What played out in the National Assembly is the APC trying to go against what Nigerians want. It was definitely not bi-partisan,” he said.
He further described the situation as “nothing short of a rape of our democracy,” stressing that Nigeria has worked hard to build democratic institutions since 1999.
