FBI Tinubu drug investigation details have emerged after the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed in a sworn declaration that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was the subject of a criminal investigation into drug-trafficking crimes in the early 1990s.

The declaration was submitted on August 28, 2026, before the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. It forms part of an ongoing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by American transparency activist Aaron Greenspan, who has been seeking access to FBI records related to the Nigerian president.

In the filing, the FBI stated that “the responsive records herein were compiled in furtherance of the FBI’s investigation of multiple individuals for drug trafficking crimes.” The agency also noted that “the court has already determined that an official acknowledgement had been made of an investigation of Bola Tinubu.” This official confirmation of the FBI Tinubu drug investigation marks a significant development in the long-running transparency case.

The latest declaration follows an important April 2025 ruling by US District Judge Beryl Howell. In that decision, Judge Howell held that the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) could no longer rely on “Glomar” responses a legal tactic in which agencies neither confirm nor deny the existence of records. The judge determined that sufficient official acknowledgment of an investigation involving Tinubu already existed in the public record, and ordered both agencies to search for and process non-exempt documents responsive to the FOIA requests.

Among the specific records sought by Greenspan are the “entire FBI file for Bola Ahmed Tinubu” and FBI Form 302 interview records involving Tinubu from FBI Case No. 245-IP-71386-UUUUUU, covering the period between 1992 and 1993.

The FBI Tinubu drug investigation is linked to a broader US law-enforcement probe in the early 1990s into a Chicago-area heroin trafficking network. Publicly available court documents from a related civil forfeiture action in the Northern District of Illinois show that US authorities obtained the forfeiture of approximately $460,000 held in a bank account in Tinubu’s name in 1993. An affidavit by IRS Special Agent Kevin Moss in that case cited probable cause that certain funds controlled by Tinubu represented proceeds of drug trafficking or were involved in money-laundering transactions under US federal statutes.

It is important to note that the FBI Tinubu drug investigation and the related civil forfeiture proceedings did not result in any criminal charges, arrest, indictment, or conviction against Tinubu. The action was an in rem civil forfeiture case directed at the funds themselves rather than a criminal prosecution of any individual. Tinubu has consistently denied any wrongdoing in connection with the matter.

President Tinubu’s legal team has actively participated in the current FOIA proceedings. They have argued that further disclosure of records would violate privacy protections under US law and that the litigation is being pursued for political purposes rather than legitimate oversight of American government activities. The Nigerian Presidency has described recent publicity surrounding the FBI declaration as politically motivated, particularly in the context of the approaching 2027 general elections.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, has dismissed the coordinated media attention as a demonstration of political desperation. The Presidency maintains that the publicly known aspects of the 1990s case have been available for decades and do not amount to new evidence of criminal conduct.

The FBI Tinubu drug investigation confirmation does not, by itself, establish that President Tinubu committed any drug-trafficking offence. Court materials and the FBI’s sworn declaration make clear that the agency’s acknowledgment relates only to the existence of an investigation of multiple individuals, of which Tinubu was one subject. No finding of guilt has been made.

The FOIA case remains ongoing. The FBI has submitted additional material under seal for Judge Howell’s private (in camera) review concerning certain portions of the records that the agency continues to withhold under FOIA exemptions related to personal privacy, law-enforcement techniques, and potential risks to individuals.

This development has renewed public and political interest in the historical records surrounding the 1990s Chicago investigation. Transparency advocates argue that full release of non-exempt documents serves the public interest given Tinubu’s position as the current President of Nigeria. Supporters of the president counter that the matter was resolved more than three decades ago through civil proceedings and that repeated attempts to reopen it are driven by partisan motives.

As the US court continues to examine the remaining disputed records, the sworn FBI declaration stands as the clearest official confirmation to date that President Bola Tinubu was the subject of a drug-trafficking investigation in the early 1990s. The declaration, however, stops short of any determination of criminal liability.
