Fela Anikulapo-Kuti Grammy Hall of Fame

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s 1976 classic Zombie has been inducted into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame, honouring its enduring global and political impact

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ela Anikulapo-Kuti’s iconic 1976 album Zombie has officially been inducted into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame, marking a significant global recognition of the Afrobeat legend’s revolutionary music.

The Recording Academy announced the honour earlier this week, describing the album as a recording of “lasting qualitative or historical significance.”

The late musician’s eldest son, Femi Kuti, received the award on behalf of the Kuti family and expressed deep appreciation. “Our father’s legacy lives on.

We are honoured to accept this Grammy Hall of Fame award on behalf of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. His music continues to inspire and unite people across the world,” he wrote on X.

The Grammy Hall of Fame, established in 1973, celebrates recordings that are at least 25 years old and have made significant cultural or historical impact.

Each year, a special committee of music experts across various disciplines selects new inductees. This year, Zombie takes its place alongside legendary recordings by Jay-Z, Santana and Cat Stevens.

Fela’s Zombie was more than an album it was a daring political statement. Released at the height of Nigeria’s military rule, it condemned authoritarianism and blind obedience within the armed forces.

Its explosive message drew severe retaliation from the government. In 1977, soldiers reportedly stormed Fela’s Kalakuta Republic, destroying property and attacking family members and supporters.

Despite such brutal attempts to suppress his voice, Fela’s message endured. Today, nearly 30 years after his death, his fearless advocacy for justice, social consciousness and African pride remains a global reference point in music and activism.

The 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame recognition affirms Fela’s place not only in Nigerian history but in the canon of world music.

His enduring influence continues to shape new generations of artists and activists who find truth and power in his sound.
