Osun election: FRSC tightens road safety with 2,500 personnel

Federal Road Safety Corps Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed and Osun Sector Command officials have deployed 2,500 personnel and 50 operational vehicles across Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, with motorists warned to comply with traffic regulations and movement restrictions.

The deployment, announced on Friday, is designed to keep major routes orderly while supporting the movement of election officials, accredited observers, security personnel and other road users before, during and after the poll.

According to the FRSC, 2,300 personnel are being drawn from the Osun Sector Command, while 50 personnel each have been deployed from Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo and Ogun commands.

The agency has also positioned 50 operational vehicles at strategic locations across the state.

The fleet includes seven heavy-duty tow trucks and six ambulances intended to strengthen rescue operations, emergency response and traffic management.

The measures come as Osun prepares for a closely watched governorship election, with authorities stepping up security and logistical arrangements to minimise disruption during the voting period.

FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, said the personnel would also support enforcement of the movement restriction order imposed for the election.

“We have deployed personnel across the three senatorial districts to ensure smooth traffic flow, quick emergency response and safe movement during the election,” the FRSC said in a statement signed by Ohaeri.

The agency said its personnel would work alongside the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security and other relevant bodies while maintaining neutrality and professionalism.

Mohammed said the deployment reflected the Corps’ responsibility to contribute to a peaceful and credible electoral process while protecting road users.

“We are deploying our personnel as part of our commitment to supporting a peaceful and credible election, while ensuring road safety and effective traffic management throughout the electoral process,” Mohammed said.

The FRSC also said vehicles supplied by fleet operators for transporting electoral materials would undergo inspection and certification before being used.

The checks are intended to ensure that vehicles carrying election materials are mechanically sound and capable of completing their assignments without creating avoidable safety risks.

The movement restriction will take effect from 6:00 a.m. on Saturday in designated areas, according to the road safety agency.

Enforcement vehicles will be positioned at strategic points across the state.

The FRSC has consequently urged motorists, commercial transport operators and other road users to plan journeys in advance and avoid routes affected by the restrictions.

The agency’s expanded presence is expected to be particularly important around major junctions, polling areas and routes used by election officials and security personnel.

Beyond traffic control, the deployment highlights the wider logistical demands of conducting an election involving large numbers of voters, officials and security personnel across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The FRSC said its officers would carry out their duties firmly but impartially, with respect for human rights and the operational guidelines governing the election.

For motorists, the message remains straightforward: comply with the restrictions, avoid unnecessary journeys and allow emergency and election-related movements to proceed without obstruction.

With 2,500 personnel and a dedicated fleet of rescue and recovery vehicles on standby, the FRSC is seeking to ensure that road safety does not become an additional challenge during a crucial electoral weekend in Osun.
