As financial industry players rush to increase market penetration through continuous innovation of mobile applications, one of the Nigerian tier-1 finance houses, United Bank for Africa, is taking all the bashing.
Recall that the bank bombarded its mobile app subscribers sometimes last year with messages ordering them to switch over to a newly-launched UBA Mobile app or risk inability to make transactions on the old one. But a quick look by Freelanews indicated that the two apps are still live at the same time.
This threat worked like magic as many rushed to download the highly rated app. But to the chagrin of many, the bank may have over-estimated itself as the app performed below expectations.
A quick stroll before downloading the app would open the eyes of a prospective user to the saturation of negative reviews against the app.
Despite being released many months ago, the new mobile app struggles to clinch a 3.4 star rating out of 5.0.
To many users, the new UBA app is not reliable as many often have to fall back to the previous release to get their transactions done seamlessly.
“In my experience, the app is not reliable. I often fall back to its predecessor for my banking needs. It reports network errors when other apps are running smoothly. I do not know why UBA allows two mobile banking apps to be live at the same time. Take one down and channel the energy and resources into making the one available worth it. To call it disappointing is really for mild use of words!” James Martins wrote.

To Temitope Osimokun, though the new look is nice, it was one of the worst apps he ever came across.
“Interface looks nice. However, still one of the worst app I’ve ever come across. It now loads as quickly as normal apps but prevent you from hitting the login button after you’ve typed in your password. What good is an app you can’t log into? It’s shocking that UBA could develop an app this bad in this day and age. You guys dropped the ball on this one.One of the worst banking apps I’ve come across in a long time. Please fix it,” Osimokun submitted.
Infact, almost all the reviews on the app returned negative, which is an enormous dent to the image of a company gunning for global recognition.
“Great app, when it works. It seldom does. Heck,, it’s not working right now. I’m not sure what to do. It’s unfortunate. It’s absolutely fraught with bugs and issues for now. I hope these get resolved soon. Till then, 2 stars. Edit: I changed 2 stars to 1. This app is mostly useless. How can it be this bad? It never loads up, no matter how strong of an internet connection. 90% of the time, I don’t know why that is. I can’t rely on the app as a result. I tried to use it right now and it’s the same,” Emmanuel Ogunmefun wrote.
It beats imagination that a financial institution as big as UBA could find it difficult deploying a working mobile app for its large customer base.
