Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso reportedly threatens to leave the NDC after disputed candidate changes spark internal faction tensions in Kano State

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has reportedly threatened to leave the Nigeria Democratic Congress over an escalating internal dispute involving the replacement of several Kwankwasiyya faction candidates in Kano State.

Party sources say the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) altered an earlier list of nominees submitted by the Kwankwasiyya bloc, citing an alleged breach of a power-sharing arrangement agreed by both sides.

The agreement, reportedly documented and signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, was said to outline a structured sharing formula between the party’s original leadership and the Kwankwasiyya faction.

The document was also copied to key party figures, including Senator Seriake Dickson, Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman, underscoring the national sensitivity of the internal dispute.

According to the revised list, the party approved candidates for several federal constituencies, including Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani for Kumbotso, Nasiru Ali Ahmed for Nassarawa, Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id for Kano Municipal, and Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa/Tudun Wada.

Other approved candidates include Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila/Takai, and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata for Gwale.

Adjustments were also made to tickets for the Kano State House of Assembly in constituencies such as Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu.

The NDC maintains that the changes were necessary to enforce a 60–40 power-sharing formula between the Kwankwasiyya bloc and the party’s original structure, with the faction receiving 60 per cent of positions.

The development has triggered renewed tension within the party, with concerns that the dispute could widen internal divisions ahead of future elections.

Kwankwaso is said to be dissatisfied with the adjustments and is reportedly considering his political options as negotiations continue behind the scenes.
