Mudashiru Obasa warns ex-chairmen to stop undue control, urging new leaders to lead freely and deliver results for Lagos communities

Former local government chairmen in Lagos State have been powerfully warned by Mudashiru Obasa to stop exerting undue influence over their successors.

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly made these remarks during a meeting with newly elected chairmen on Tuesday, September 23, at the Assembly Complex.

Obasa condemned the practice of ex-chairmen signing cheques and colluding with council treasurers, stressing that new leaders should be allowed to operate independently.

“Let the new chairmen breathe,” he said, emphasising that former leaders must remove their grip and let fresh governance take centre stage.

He challenged the new chairmen to honour, but not be answerable to, their predecessors. “You are the ones in the saddle now. So, take charge,” Obasa insisted.

He also cautioned about the pressure from past chairmen for the immediate repayment of loans without proper investigation or renegotiation, urging due diligence for the benefit of constituents.

Obasa added that four months in office is enough time for the public to see tangible results.

He lamented a worrying trend of council deaths and reminded leaders to prioritise their health and the welfare of their communities.

Earlier that day, the Assembly celebrated Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on her 65th birthday.

Members praised her dedication to public service and empowerment initiatives, recognising her as a pillar of support and a significant figure in national development.

Speaker Obasa commended Senator Tinubu’s loyalty and impact, noting her unique ability to sustain important initiatives like the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO).
