Nigerian man sentenced to prison for sexual assaults on UK trains

Nigerian man sentenced to prison for sexual assaults on Hampshire to London trains, with court issuing five-year prevention order

Esosa Eguakin, 31, of Courtelle Road, Coventry, has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to two counts of sexual assault committed on commuter trains travelling from Hampshire to London.

The Nigerian man sentenced to prison was convicted following an investigation by the British Transport Police. Eguakin received a two-year custodial sentence at Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

The court heard that on August 21, shortly after 7.15am, Eguakin boarded a service from Fratton to London Waterloo and deliberately positioned himself behind a woman in her 30s before assaulting her during the morning commute.

On October 6, shortly after 6am, he assaulted another woman on a service from Eastleigh to London Waterloo. When challenged, he claimed he was attempting to retrieve a mobile phone he had dropped.

He refused to move away until an off-duty police officer intervened and escorted him off the train at Woking, where he was detained until uniformed officers arrived.

A detailed investigation by British Transport Police detectives linked him to both offences, resulting in the charges.

In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order prohibiting him from engaging in specific behaviours, including sitting or standing next to or opposite lone women on public transport.

Detective Constable David Stewart described the conduct as predatory and distressing for the victims, stating that the outcome reflects a firm commitment to passenger safety.

British Transport Police urged members of the public to report sexual offences on trains or at stations by texting 61016, or by calling 999 in an emergency.
