Nobody can influence my players’ selection – Rohr

Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, has stressed that he won’t pick players who are not good enough to represent the country, amidst pressure to scout talents for the national team from the domestic league.

Rohr signed a new two-year contract with the Nigeria Football Federation last week with new clauses inserted in the deal.

Though mandated to watch the Nigeria Professional Football League and give its players a chance in the national team by the Nigeria Football Federation, the Franco-German said he would not be arm-twist into picking players who were not good enough because that wasn’t part of his contract.

“It is not part of my contract to take players who are not so good like other ones,” Rohr said on Channels TV on Monday.

“I can choose my players myself. It is the most important thing, so nobody can tell me who to take or not. I can take the best players and I don’t do it alone because we have a team.

“We have to take the best one no matter where they are coming from.”

The 66-year-old however, added that he would not close the door on players who had what it took to feature in the Eagles team.

“Everybody who is doing well in their clubs has a chance to come to the Super Eagles. We don’t look at where they are playing, but we only see the quality of the players.

“Unfortunately the Nigerian league is not playing for the moment like a lot of other leagues. But they also have the chances to come because you know I invited already 23 players from the Nigerian league.

“I still have one of them time with me, goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa. But all the other players that we invited, once they are in our Super Eagles team they go to Europe and they are sold to various clubs. Then there are no more players from the league in the team.

“It’s not always possible but we can always have the best one. If you want to come to this team, you have to be very strong because we have already very good young players in Europe.
