Ogogo’s health battle: Doctor sheds light on palliative care

Dr Olusina Ajidahun says moving some advanced cancer patients to palliative care does not necessarily mean hospitals have abandoned treatment.

Ogogo’s health battle: Doctor sheds light on palliative care

Veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, became the focus of a fresh medical discussion in Nigeria after physician Dr Olusina Ajidahun clarified the meaning of palliative care following emotional appeals from the actor’s daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, for further treatment for their 66-year-old father, who they said has stage-four cancer.

Ajidahun, who is not involved in Hassan’s medical care, said the daughters’ description that hospitals had refused to treat their father could be misunderstood, particularly if the actor’s doctors had determined that further chemotherapy or disease-directed treatment was no longer appropriate.

The physician, who uses the name The Bearded Dr Sina on X, explained that palliative care can become part of the management of advanced cancer when available disease-directed treatments have been exhausted or are no longer providing meaningful benefit.

“They don’t want to treat my father again. This is a dangerous statement and can set the tide against the medical team treating her Dad,” Ajidahun wrote.

He said palliative care focuses on controlling symptoms, easing distress and helping patients maintain the best possible quality of life when cancer can no longer be effectively controlled through curative treatment.

His explanation adds important context to the family’s appeal, although it does not establish that this is the specific reason Hassan’s doctors have reportedly stopped chemotherapy.

The actor’s treatment team has not publicly explained his individual medical circumstances.

The distinction is medically significant.

Stage-four cancer generally means that cancer has spread from its original site to distant parts of the body, although the treatment options and prognosis vary considerably depending on the type of cancer and how it has responded to treatment.

Palliative care also does not automatically mean that a patient is being denied all medical treatment.

Specialist palliative care can be provided alongside cancer treatment and may focus on pain, nausea, fatigue, breathing difficulties and other symptoms while supporting the patient and family.

Ajidahun therefore cautioned against interpreting a transition away from chemotherapy as evidence that healthcare professionals are deliberately abandoning a patient.

“Saying they don’t want to treat my father makes it look like they are intentionally rejecting him,” he said, warning that such a perception could fuel hostility towards healthcare workers.

His comments followed separate emotional videos posted by Hassan’s daughters.

Lima said the family had discovered the seriousness of her father’s condition only about three weeks earlier and appealed to anyone with access to cancer specialists or a hospital willing to assess him.

She repeatedly stressed that the family was not asking Nigerians for money.

“Please, I’m begging you. If you know somebody that knows somebody that will be willing to treat him, anything, we’re willing to try anything,” Lima said.

Kira also appealed for help, saying her father had stage-four cancer and that a hospital had told the family that chemotherapy could no longer be given.

The younger daughter asked anyone who could provide appropriate cancer treatment to contact the family, saying she was desperate to find another opportunity for her father.

Her appeal included a request for both medical treatment and herbal remedies, a point that prompted a firm warning from Ajidahun.

The doctor advised the public not to substitute unverified herbal preparations for evidence-based cancer treatment.

“If you have herbs treat cancer”

Don’t do this,” he wrote, warning that unverified concoctions could damage other organs, create additional complications and result in wasted money.

The warning is particularly relevant because families facing advanced cancer can be vulnerable to unproven treatments promoted as cures.

Medical decisions for an individual patient, however, depend on the cancer type, its spread, previous treatment and the patient’s overall condition.

Ajidahun also emphasised that he was commenting independently on the daughters’ public appeals and was not part of Hassan’s medical team.

“I do hope Ogogo’s daughter and family see this. Wishing the family all the best throughout the trying times,” he said.

The clarification comes as concern grows around the veteran actor’s health.

Hassan, whose career spans more than four decades, is one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba cinema.

He has appeared in more than 300 films and has built a substantial following through acting, producing and other work within the Nigerian film industry.

His daughters’ appeals have consequently attracted widespread attention, with fans and colleagues expressing concern over his reported condition.

The family’s account and the doctor’s explanation can both be understood without assuming that either side has provided the complete medical picture.

Hassan’s daughters are seeking additional help because they believe their father still needs treatment, while Ajidahun is explaining that a shift to palliative care can be a medically appropriate decision in some cases of advanced cancer.

What remains unclear is the exact type of cancer Hassan has, the extent to which it has spread, the treatments he has already received and why his current medical team reportedly decided against further chemotherapy.

Those details have not been publicly confirmed by Hassan’s management, family or treating doctors.

For the veteran actor’s family, the immediate concern remains finding the best possible care.

For the wider public, the episode also highlights the importance of understanding what palliative care actually means before concluding that a patient has simply been abandoned by the healthcare system.
