Peter Obi pledges to release Nnamdi Kanu and pursue dialogue-based solutions to insecurity if elected president

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he would release detained separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu and pursue dialogue with key stakeholders involved in Nigeria’s security challenges if elected into office.

Obi made the remarks while outlining his views on political engagement, freedom of expression and conflict resolution, arguing that national stability would be better achieved through dialogue and negotiation than through prolonged confrontation.

Peter Obi Pledges to Release Nnamdi Kanu as part of what he described as a broader strategy of political engagement aimed at addressing underlying grievances and reducing tensions across the country.

“I will release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. You can’t arrest someone just because the person speaks on radio,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor maintained that political leaders must be willing to engage with individuals and groups whose actions or views may be controversial, provided such engagement advances peace and national cohesion.

Obi also referenced Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi in discussing how he would approach negotiations with actors linked to insecurity.

“I am a politician. If I am in government today, I will discuss and engage with Gumi, give bandits what they want,” he said.

The comments are likely to generate debate among security experts, political stakeholders and civil society groups, particularly regarding the appropriate balance between dialogue, law enforcement and national security.

Supporters of negotiation-based approaches have often argued that sustained engagement can help resolve conflicts and encourage disarmament, while critics contend that concessions to armed groups could embolden criminal activity and undermine the rule of law.

The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu remains one of Nigeria’s most contentious political and legal issues, attracting widespread public and judicial attention in recent years.

Similarly, discussions surrounding negotiations with armed groups have featured prominently in national conversations on tackling banditry, kidnapping and insurgency across parts of the country.

Obi has consistently advocated dialogue, economic development and inclusive governance as central pillars of his approach to resolving Nigeria’s security and political challenges.

The latest remarks come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures and governing party leaders presenting competing visions for addressing the country’s security and economic concerns.
