Rio Ngumoha faces World Cup setback comes after the 17-year-old was left out of England’s 55-man provisional squad, which was finalised nearly a month ago, making him ineligible for late replacement selection under FIFA regulations.
Although Ngumoha was included among training players in the broader 26-man group travelling to the United States, his omission from the official provisional list has effectively ended any chance of a last-minute call-up.
The decision represents a significant blow for the highly rated youngster, who has been widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s most promising emerging talents.
Ngumoha made his senior England debut as a substitute in a 1-0 friendly victory over New Zealand on 6 June, marking a breakthrough moment in his international career.
He also impressed by earning the Player of the Match award in what was described as a composed and energetic performance.
His debut placed him among the youngest players ever to represent England, further highlighting his rapid rise at international level.
Despite that milestone, FIFA rules stipulate that only players included in the provisional squad are eligible for late tournament replacements in the event of injury or illness before the opening match, scheduled against Croatia on 17 June.
England setup has also included other promising young players in training arrangements, including Alex Scott, Josh King and Ethan Nwaneri, all of whom are being assessed for future involvement rather than immediate tournament action.
However, Ngumoha will still have the opportunity to feature again for England in their final pre-tournament friendly against Costa Rica on 10 June, offering another chance to impress at senior level.

The development is likely to be viewed as a frustrating but instructive moment in the teenager’s early international journey, as England finalise preparations for a highly anticipated World Cup campaign.
