Sanwo-Olu Widows Support provides food, cash and education aid to over 600 widows and veterans at Lagos Legion Day
Lagos State Governor Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has provided relief materials and financial assistance to more than 600 widows and 20 physically challenged military veterans through the Nigerian Legion, Lagos State Council, during the Lagos Legion Day celebration in Oshodi.

The support, delivered at the Multi-Agency Office Complex Hall in Bolade on Tuesday, included bags of rice, educational materials and cash gifts aimed at easing the economic burden on families of fallen military personnel and retired service members.
The Lagos Legion Chairman, Mr Akeem Wolimoh, disclosed that the governor donated 500 bags of 25kg rice and also pledged N100 million to support the activities and welfare programmes of the council.
Mr Akeem Wolimoh described the intervention as a compassionate and impactful gesture that would significantly improve the living conditions of beneficiaries.
Representing the Lagos State Government, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr Olanrewaju Layode, through a ministry director, Mr Silva Ope, assured the legion of the administration’s continued commitment to the welfare of veterans and their families.
At the event, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, represented by the Director of Veteran Health, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Edet Effiong, encouraged retired personnel to remain active and make use of Defence Health Maintenance Limited for their medical needs.
A token donation was also presented to support the legion’s activities.
As part of broader welfare efforts, the Lagos Legion announced an education initiative that will provide annual financial support to 25 students from beneficiaries’ families.
Several recipients expressed gratitude, highlighting the human impact of the programme. The Coordinator of the Widows of Military Fallen Heroes Association, Mrs Esther Leko, said the support had helped ease the hardship faced since the loss of her husband.
The Coordinator of the Military Widows Association, Mrs Eno Zamani, commended the legion for expanding its platform to accommodate more widows, while retired Army Warrant Officer Mr Ganui Odunuga offered prayers for the Lagos State Government and the legion leadership.
