The Sheikh Masussuka killing in Katsina leaves two dead as police deploy tactical teams and Governor Dikko Umaru Radda calls for a thorough investigation
The Katsina State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police CP Ali Umar Fage, confirmed on Monday, 26 October 2026, that gunmen had killed Islamic scholar Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, outside Masussuka’s residence in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State, prompting a security response and calls for a thorough investigation.
The attack occurred at about 7.30 pm, when two armed men riding on a motorcycle reportedly opened fire on the victims before fleeing.

Both men sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced them dead.
The police confirmation, reported by New Citizen and other Nigerian news outlets, brought further clarity to the circumstances surrounding the killing, although the identities of the attackers and their motive remained unknown.
According to the police statement, the Divisional Police Officer in Dutsin-Ma led a team of officers to the scene after receiving information about the shooting.
Commissioner Ali Umar Fage subsequently ordered the deployment of tactical and operational teams to the area to track down the fleeing suspects.
Police said an investigation had commenced, with efforts under way to identify and apprehend those responsible. No arrests had been announced in the reports available at the time of publication.
The killing also drew a response from Katsina State Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, who mourned the cleric and described him as a voice for peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony.
In a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, Radda called for a comprehensive investigation and urged security agencies to ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
“Those behind this heinous act must be brought to justice,” the governor said, appealing to residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist investigators.
Radda also extended his condolences to the bereaved family, the Islamic community and others affected by the deaths.
His appeal for calm reflected concerns about the potential for a violent incident to heighten tensions while the circumstances remained unclear.
Masussuka was a prominent Islamic scholar known for his Qur’an-centred teachings and advocacy of peaceful coexistence.
He was also associated with the Qur’aniyyun movement, whose approach to Islamic religious authority has drawn debate and disagreement within Muslim communities.
His public profile extended beyond religious teaching. According to reporting by The Gazette, Masussuka spoke against violent extremism and radicalisation and had faced threats and intimidation during his lifetime.
Those reports provide relevant background to his public work, but they do not establish a motive for the attack or show who was responsible.
The circumstances of his death have therefore raised questions that investigators will need to address, including whether the attackers acted for a personal, criminal or other reason.
At present, police have not publicly identified a motive, and no conclusion should be drawn about the circumstances beyond the confirmed shooting.
The attack also came just days before a peace and unity gathering reportedly scheduled for 31 October 2026, which Masussuka had been preparing for, according to local media reports.
It was not immediately clear whether the event would proceed following his death.
Dutsin-Ma is among the local government areas in Katsina State affected by wider security concerns across north-western Nigeria, where communities have experienced attacks, kidnappings and other forms of armed violence.
The region’s security challenges have placed sustained pressure on residents, local authorities and security agencies.
However, the broader insecurity does not by itself explain this particular attack.
Establishing whether the killing was connected to any wider pattern will depend on evidence gathered by investigators.
For Masussuka’s followers and the wider community, the loss carries a particular weight because of his religious influence and public advocacy for peaceful relations.
The governor’s statement sought to recognise that contribution while directing attention towards accountability and the need to prevent further violence.
The immediate priority remains identifying the attackers, establishing the circumstances of the shooting and bringing those responsible before the courts.
Until investigators provide further information, key questions about the motive and any possible threats connected to the incident remain unresolved.
The Sheikh Masussuka killing has left two families grieving and raised renewed concerns about security in Katsina.

The progress of the police investigation will be central to establishing what happened and ensuring that speculation does not take the place of evidence.
