Residents, civil society groups and community stakeholders condemned the killing during a joint press conference organised by the Minanata Community and the Minanata Future Association, describing the attack as brutal and senseless.
According to accounts shared at the briefing, the suspect identified as Mansur Arzika allegedly had a prior dispute with the deceased over an earlier theft-related accusation in which Halilu reportedly identified him.
A postgraduate student of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Maccido Mohammad, alleged that the teenager was attacked while returning home and stabbed multiple times despite attempts to escape.
The incident has heightened concerns over security within the area, with residents urging law enforcement agencies and the Sokoto State Government to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Legal practitioner Ibrahim Muhammad also pledged legal action, insisting that the case must not be allowed to go unresolved, stressing that accountability is essential to restoring public confidence.
The late Halilu was widely described as a committed volunteer teacher who supported learning in local schools across Sokoto metropolis.
Community members said his death has left a painful void, noting his contribution to educating younger pupils.
