President Bola Tinubu nominates Dr. Taiwo Oyedele, tax reform expert, as Minister of State for Finance, replacing Doris Anite-Uzoka

Oyedele will replace Dr. Doris Anite-Uzoka, who has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, marking her third portfolio in the current administration.

The nomination, conveyed to the Senate in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, positions Oyedele to oversee Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms and fiscal policies.

The 50-year-old economist and accountant previously chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, which overhauled Nigeria’s tax system.

The committee consolidated over 60 taxes into fewer than 10 statutes, introduced zero income tax for Nigerians earning N800,000 or less annually, and exempted small businesses with turnovers under N50 million from key levies.

Other measures included:

  •  50% tax deduction for companies hiring new workers for three years
  •  50% deduction for wage increases for lowest-paid employees
  •  Five-year corporate tax holiday for agricultural enterprises

Education and Career

Oyedele studied at Yaba College of Technology, earning a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance, followed by a BSc in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

He also completed executive programmes at the London School of Economics, Yale University, Gordon Institute of Business Science, and Harvard Kennedy School.

He spent 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, rising to Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader, before heading the presidential tax reform committee.

Oyedele is also a professor at Babcock University and a visiting scholar at Lagos Business School.

The Senate is expected to screen and confirm Oyedele’s nomination in the coming weeks, after which he will assume ministerial duties alongside substantive Finance Minister Wale Edun.
