Tinubu addresses national assembly with a powerful ceremonial speech to mark Democracy Day, dignitaries gathered for a round of national honours that celebrated service and achievement across diverse fields
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented awards to 45 notable Nigerians in the grand chamber, praising each recipient for their exceptional contributions to literature, human rights, education, journalism and public service.

Among the honourees, Professor Wole Soyinka received the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger in recognition of his enduring impact on African literature.
Professor Olatunji Dare, Kunle Ajibade, Nosa Igiebor and Dapo Olorunyomi received CON and OON honours, celebrated for excellence in journalism and teaching.
Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and Barrister Femi Falana were also among those conferred with national awards for leadership and advocacy.
Others included Senator Shehu Sani, Governor Uba Sani, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, Senator Abu Ibrahim and Senator Ame Ebute.
The president highlighted their roles in shaping Nigeria’s democratic trajectory and strengthening civic institutions.
“What these citizens have done for this nation is extraordinary,” President Tinubu declared.
“Their dedication embodies the essence of Democracy Day and the ideals of our republic.”
Several recipients such as Odia Ofeimun, Seye Kehinde, Barrister Felix Morka and Barrister Ledum Mitee were recognised.
Figures connected to historical events also received accolades.
Uncle Sam Amuka Pemu and the late Ken Saro‑Wiwa and his fellow Ogoni Nine were honoured for their courage and trail‑blazing roles in struggle and justice.

Recipients of OON awards included Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel and John Kpuine.
