President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Wednesday, 5 August, welcomed the rescue of 308 abducted Nigerians during a coordinated security operation in Kwara and Niger states, describing the mission as a landmark achievement in the country’s fight against kidnapping and terrorism.

The rescue followed a coordinated, intelligence-led operation carried out by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force, highlighting the growing coordination among the country’s security agencies.

According to the Presidency, the operation freed 163 residents abducted from Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State and 145 victims kidnapped in Niger State after security forces located them in the Kainji Lake National Park Forest in New Bussa Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the rescue as the largest single-day operation of its kind by Nigeria’s joint security team, highlighting the increasing coordination among the country’s intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

Commending the security personnel, Tinubu said the outcome reflected the growing effectiveness of Nigeria’s security architecture.

“The successful execution of this intelligence-led operation demonstrates the growing efficiency and collaboration among our security services. I commend our gallant men and women in uniform for their bravery and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives,” the President said.

The rescued victims are receiving first aid and medical care at the Wawa Cantonment Medical Facility before being reunited with their families through the governments of Kwara and Niger states.

The humanitarian response forms an important part of the operation, with rehabilitation expected to follow for many of those rescued after their ordeal.

While celebrating the breakthrough, Tinubu directed security agencies to strengthen early warning systems, expand community-based intelligence gathering and improve rapid response capabilities to reduce the risk of future mass abductions.

The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks and restoring lasting peace in affected communities.

The rescue comes as Nigeria continues to confront complex security challenges, including banditry, terrorism and kidnapping for ransom, particularly across parts of the North West and North Central regions.

Despite sustained military deployments and increased investment in security, mass abductions have remained a persistent concern in recent years.

In recent months, the Tinubu administration has sought to reinforce security operations through improved intelligence coordination and enhanced welfare for military personnel, including the approval of significant salary increases for members of the armed forces.

Officials have argued that stronger operational capacity and better troop welfare are essential to sustaining momentum against armed criminal groups.

The latest operation is likely to be viewed as a significant boost for Nigeria’s security agencies, although analysts note that preventing future kidnappings will depend on maintaining pressure on criminal networks while strengthening intelligence sharing and community engagement across vulnerable areas.
