The plan also includes reducing or merging staff at numerous other American diplomatic missions worldwide.
The memo, as reported by The New York Times, outlines a significant restructuring of America’s diplomatic presence globally, with Africa facing the most substantial impact.
Out of the ten embassies slated for closure, six are located in Africa: Central African Republic, Eritrea, Gambia, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, and South Sudan.
The memo indicates that upon finalization, the responsibilities of these closed embassies will be transferred to US embassies in neighboring countries.
This proposed reduction aligns with President Donald Trump’s broader efforts to decrease federal spending across government agencies.
According to The New York Times, the plan would “majorly affect America’s diplomatic footprint across several continents, with Africa set to be negatively affected the most.”
However, the plan requires approval from the US Congress, which remains uncertain. Concerns have been widely expressed that these continuous cutbacks could cede a critical diplomatic advantage to China, particularly in regions where Washington currently holds more influence than Beijing.
Critics argue that such contentious financial decisions could potentially jeopardize America’s national security by limiting diplomatic engagement and hindering its intelligence-gathering capabilities.
The planned closures are not limited to Africa. The memo also identifies two embassies in European nations, specifically Luxembourg and Malta, along with Grenada and Maldives, for potential shutdown.
Furthermore, the majority of the 17 consulates targeted for closure are located in Europe. France could see the closure of five consulates in Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Rennes, and Strasbourg, while Germany might lose its consulates in Düsseldorf and Leipzig if the plan receives approval.
This proposed diplomatic restructuring under the Trump administration signals a significant shift in the United States’ global engagement strategy, particularly its presence and influence in Africa.
