University of Abuja staff promotions approved for 218 academics and non-teaching personnel, including 14 new professors across diverse disciplines
The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the promotion of 218 academic and non-teaching staff following the successful completion of the university’s promotion exercise.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday, confirming that the council ratified external assessment reports that evaluated candidates’ scholarly publications, particularly for promotions to the professorial cadre.
The council convened on December 11 and 12 at the university’s main campus to review the recommendations.
Fourteen scholars were promoted to the rank of professor, while 16 advanced to associate professor.
Additionally, 12 academic staff were elevated to senior lecturer, seven to lecturer 1, one to lecturer II, and one staff member attained the rank of senior librarian.
Non-teaching staff promotions included one individual advancing to Level 15, 22 to Level 14, 29 others within the senior staff cadre, and 115 staff to Level 13 and below, reflecting the broad scope of the exercise.
The professorial promotions spanned a wide array of disciplines, including poetry and psychoanalytic studies, directing and communication aesthetics, feminism and gender studies, philosophy, chemical and civil engineering, applied chemistry, theoretical physics, internal medicine (neurology), dermatology, neurosurgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, and radiology.

The university spokesperson described the promotion exercise as “a testament to the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and professional growth,” underscoring its impact on both scholarship and operational efficiency across the campus.
