Nnamdi Azikiwe University says the individuals in the viral video are neither its staff nor students and urges the public to verify information before sharing

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has firmly dismissed the UNIZIK Viral Lecturer Claim, describing reports linking the institution to a widely circulated video alleging misconduct between a lecturer and a female student as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, said investigations carried out by the institution established that neither the individuals featured in the video nor the location of the incident had any connection with the university.

The clarification followed the circulation of a viral video on social media from Wednesday, which purportedly showed a lecturer being confronted by students over alleged inappropriate conduct with a female student inside an office. The footage showed several people forcing their way into an office before the man allegedly escaped through a window.

A voice accompanying the video claimed the incident occurred at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and described the lecturer as a “notorious randy” academic allegedly known within the institution.

Rejecting the claims, Attah said the university had verified the matter and found no link between the incident and the institution.

“The attention of the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has been drawn to a viral video and news reports circulating online about a lecturer erroneously identified as a staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University reportedly caught in an inappropriate behaviour with a student within a university premises.

“We wish to categorically state that the report is not only false but misleading. After due verification, it has been established that the incident did not happen at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

“The man in question seen in the viral video is also not a staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University. For the records, no staff or student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University is connected in any way to the said incident,” the statement read.

The university stressed that it maintains strict ethical standards for both staff and students, adding that its administration has zero tolerance for the exploitation of students under any circumstances.

Attah said the institution was committed to protecting its reputation against misinformation while ensuring that any genuine cases of misconduct would be handled in accordance with established disciplinary procedures.

He also expressed concern over the increasing spread of unverified information on digital platforms, attributing the trend to the race for online traffic and the growing influence of citizen journalism.

“The advent of citizen journalism, social media, and the rush to break news first and gain traffic have fuelled misinformation, disinformation, and the spread of outright falsehoods. However, digital communication has also made it much easier to balance news reports and fact-check certain information before public dissemination,” he said.

The university urged media organisations, bloggers and members of the public to verify information with appropriate authorities before publication and called on platforms that had circulated the reports to retract and correct the false claims.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the institution’s commitment to transparency and open communication, while encouraging journalists to seek official clarification whenever issues concerning the university arise before publishing reports.
