A University of Lagos, UNILAG, student has taken to social media to express her distress over the recently implemented 500% hike in school fees, highlighting the difficulties she faces in affording both tuition fees and accommodation expenses.

Recall that in July this year, the university announced an upward review of its fees effective September 1.

Despite the financial challenges, the student has managed to maintain an impressive Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Identified on Twitter as Victoria, the 200-level Education in English student at UNILAG shared her predicament with the public.

Victoria: The money gotten from odds and menial jobs I engaged in during the holiday is still not up to half of the fees. I need HELP and I don’t want to DROP OUT of school.

She revealed that she had been self-sponsoring her education since her first year at the prestigious university. However, with the exorbitant increase in school fees, she is now unable to afford both the fees and accommodation.

Victoria disclosed that her meager income from odd jobs and menial labour during the holiday period is still not even close to half the sum required to settle her school fees. Fearing that she might be forced to drop out of school, she made a heartfelt appeal for financial assistance through her social media account.

In her plea for help, Victoria emphasised her determination to continue her education and revealed her contact information for potential supporters to reach out to her. Victoria can be contacted via her telephone number 08184024313 or through direct messages on Twitter.

The significant increase in UNILAG’s school fees has sparked outrage among students and parents alike. Many have criticized the decision to implement such a steep rise, particularly during an unstable economic period where families are already burdened by financial difficulties.
