The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that Ogun State witnessed a total of 839 auto crashes in the year 2023, resulting in the tragic loss of 351 lives. The state Sector Commander, Mr. Anthony Uga, disclosed these figures on Thursday during an interaction with the News Agency of Nigeria.

In addition to the fatalities, 2,092 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries in these accidents. Mr. Uga attributed the majority of the crashes to drivers’ excessive speeding and other traffic violations. He further highlighted wrongful overtaking, tire bursts, and night journeys as contributing factors to the alarming statistics.

Expressing concern over the situation, Uga appealed to motorists, particularly those commuting along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, to refrain from over-speeding and adopt safe driving practices to prevent avoidable accidents. He emphasized the importance of installing speed-limiting devices in vehicles and strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations.

The FRSC official also cautioned against the use of expired tires and encouraged drivers to ensure adequate rest before embarking on journeys. To enhance road safety awareness, Uga announced plans for the FRSC to conduct public enlightenment campaigns at motor parks, churches, and mosques. Additionally, the FRSC will visit schools in Ogun State to educate students on the significance of embracing road safety practices from an early age.
