UBA America celebrates 40 years of fostering Africa-US economic ties

United Bank for Africa Plc is celebrating 40 years of UBA America, which has played a key role in fostering economic and cultural ties between Africa and the US. Established as a representative office in 1982, UBA America became a full-fledged branch in 1984, offering financial solutions such as trade finance and payment services. The bank’s leadership praised its commitment to innovation and financial inclusion over the past four decades.

Established in 1982 as a representative office in New York, UBA America received a federal banking licence in 1984, allowing it to operate as a full-fledged branch with the same privileges as a US national bank.

This enabled UBA America to provide a range of innovative financial solutions, including trade finance, payment services, loan services, and foreign exchange.

Over the past four decades, UBA America has emerged as a key player in the financial sector, catering to the needs of African banks, global corporations, and development organisations.

UBA’s Group Managing Director and CEO, Oliver Alawuba, lauded UBA America’s contributions, emphasising its innovative solutions and strong corporate governance.

He noted that the branch’s success over 40 years reflects UBA’s vision and determination to make a substantial impact in the financial industry.

Sola Yomi-Ajayi, UBA America’s CEO and Group Executive Director for International Banking, reflected on the bank’s resilience and commitment to Africa.

She expressed gratitude for the hard work of the staff and reiterated UBA America’s dedication to promoting financial inclusion, forging partnerships, and maintaining regulatory compliance while providing access to global financial markets.

The celebration of UBA America’s 40-year journey highlights its continued focus on excellence and innovation, showcasing its role in bridging financial gaps between Africa and the US.
