Broadcasting legend Anike Agbaje-Williams, Africa’s first female TV broadcaster, passes away at 88, leaving an enduring media legacy

 

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]apo Saheed, Executive Director of HR People Magazine, is mourning the passing of his grand aunt, Chief (Mrs.) Anike Agbaje-Williams, a groundbreaking media personality who died peacefully on Wednesday, 26 February 2025, at the age of 88.

Born on 23 October 1936, Chief (Mrs.) Agbaje-Williams was a trailblazer in Nigerian broadcasting. On 31 October 1959, she made history as the first female broadcaster on Africa’s first television station, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV).

Her career spanned over three decades, during which she excelled as a presenter, producer, and director, shaping the industry with her expertise and charisma.

Beyond her professional achievements, she was admired for her kindness and generosity, positively impacting the lives of many, including her grandnephew, Dapo Saheed. Reflecting on her legacy, Mr. Saheed stated, “She will remain in my heart forever.”

Chief (Mrs.) Agbaje-Williams is survived by her children, who have established themselves in various fields globally. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Her passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian broadcasting, but her influence and contributions will continue to inspire generations. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
