Fire breaks out on LAGFERRY vessel at Ipakodo Terminal, passengers evacuated safely

A fire broke out on a LAGFERRY vessel at Ipakodo Terminal, Ikorodu. All passengers were safely evacuated, and investigations are ongoing

 

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] fire incident occurred this morning at approximately 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, involving the LAGFERRY vessel, “Igbega Eko,” which was en route to Victoria Island.

The vessel, carrying 19 passengers, was caught in the blaze while navigating the busy Lagos waterways.

Upon receiving a distress call, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) immediately activated its emergency response team.

The team quickly arrived at the scene, coordinating efforts with LAGFERRY, other boat operators, and first responders to bring the situation under control.

Thankfully, all passengers and crew aboard the vessel were safely evacuated. Four passengers sustained minor injuries during the incident and are currently receiving medical attention.

Authorities are grateful that the situation was resolved swiftly without any fatalities.

In response to the incident, LASWA has launched a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire. The investigation will be conducted in close collaboration with LAGFERRY and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that all aspects of the incident are fully examined.

Preliminary findings will guide any necessary updates to safety protocols and fire prevention measures across Lagos’ ferry operations.

LASWA has reassured the public that all safety measures remain in place. Ferry services in the region are continuing as scheduled, and the authority encourages all passengers to follow established safety guidelines while travelling on the waterways.

As the investigation continues, LASWA will provide further updates on the matter. The authority remains committed to ensuring the safety of all ferry users and preventing such incidents in the future.
