FCT Police viral harassment case under investigation as command summons officers, urges victims to come forward and promises full accountability

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]CT Police viral harassment case is now under official investigation following the circulation of a video that appeared to show suspected officers intimidating a civilian in Abuja.

The development prompted swift action from the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, which confirmed the incident and summoned the officers involved.

In a statement issued on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the police acknowledged that preliminary findings have established that the altercation occurred on 4 June around 1:00 p.m.

The incident took place near the Chikakore Bridge, within the Kubwa Area Command, while a police surveillance team was on patrol.

According to Adeh, officers became suspicious after observing a vehicle parked along the FO1–Chikakore Road for over 20 minutes.

The area, she explained, was under heightened security surveillance, prompting the team to approach the vehicle and interrogate its two male occupants.

“One of the men reacted aggressively, challenged the officers’ presence, and accused them of harassment,” Adeh said.

She added that the individual drew attention from bystanders, creating a charged scene that was later captured in the viral video.

To uphold accountability and transparency, the Commissioner of Police has now summoned the officers allegedly involved in the confrontation. Internal administrative processes have begun to examine their conduct.

Adeh further appealed to the individuals shown in the video to come forward and submit formal statements, assuring that the command remains committed to professionalism and respectful public service.

“The individuals in the video are urged to come forward and provide official statements to assist the investigation,” she said. “The command will ensure a thorough and impartial review of the matter.”

The incident adds to a growing public demand for improved police conduct and institutional reforms.

Though Nigeria’s law enforcement has taken steps to address abuse and misconduct in recent years, viral content such as this continues to spark public scrutiny.

As the investigation unfolds, the FCT Police Command reaffirmed its pledge to enforce discipline within its ranks and to engage citizens with fairness and dignity, especially amid broader calls for human rights protection in policing.
