Kano unveils a drainage master plan to combat flooding after heavy rainfall, with climate change cited as a key factor behind urban water surges

Kano flooding master plan has been announced following Thursday’s severe rainfall that left several areas of the city submerged, with the government pledging sustainable action to mitigate future disasters.

In a statement on Friday, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Hashim, acknowledged the intensity of the downpour, which lasted over three hours and overwhelmed parts of the Kano metropolis.

“This incident is a clear consequence of climate change. Rising global temperatures are increasing atmospheric moisture and causing prolonged rainfall,” Dr Hashim said.

The state government had earlier desilted major drains and supported community self-help groups in clearing smaller channels.

Efforts are also ongoing to strengthen waste management systems and plant trees along roads to reduce water runoff and improve soil absorption.

A major drainage channel at Babangwari roundabout is under construction and is expected to handle more than half of the city’s stormwater when completed.

Looking ahead, Dr Hashim revealed that the government will propose a new drainage master plan in the 2026 budget to help Kano withstand the escalating impacts of climate-induced rainfall.

“The current drainage system is not built for the rainfall patterns we are now experiencing. A long-term strategy is necessary,” he said.

The commissioner urged residents to stop building on waterways and to dispose of waste properly, warning that poor urban practices are worsening flooding and putting lives at risk.
