Nigeria Mali relations strengthen as Defence Minister Badaru visits Bamako, reaffirming joint security cooperation at BAMEX 2025

Nigeria Mali relations have been reaffirmed following a high-profile meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, and Mali’s Prime Minister, General Abdoulaye Maiga, aimed at boosting bilateral cooperation and addressing mounting regional security challenges.

Badaru visited Bamako during the maiden International Defence and Security Exhibition, BAMEX 2025, where he led the Nigerian delegation to what has become a powerful platform for defence innovation and strategic dialogue across Africa.

Speaking in a statement issued by his Media Aide, Comrade Mati Ali, the minister described Mali’s reception as warm and exemplary, praising the country’s hospitality and reaffirming Nigeria’s resolve to work closely with Mali to strengthen regional stability.

Badaru conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goodwill, stressing that both countries share strategic security interests that require closer collaboration. He noted that the growing threats facing West Africa make unity and partnership more important than ever.

“I bring the goodwill and warm greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Government and people of Mali. Nigeria is committed to deepening our ties and working closely with Mali to tackle challenges that threaten peace in our region,” he said.

Responding, Maiga expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s participation in BAMEX 2025, describing the engagement as evidence of the enduring friendship and mutual respect binding both nations. He emphasised that joint efforts were essential in confronting current and future threats.

The Malian leader also hailed BAMEX as an invaluable forum for exchanging defence ideas and driving innovation capable of strengthening Africa’s long-term security architecture.

As the exhibition concluded, officials from both countries signalled renewed determination to pool experience and resources in safeguarding the region. The meeting drew senior military representatives, underscoring the seriousness of the renewed cooperation.

Nigeria’s delegation included the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, the Director of Operations at Defence Headquarters, and officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Mali, reflecting the strong national commitment to the partnership.
