Federal civil servants wage arrears are drawing growing concern as public sector workers call on the Federal Government to urgently settle the remaining three months of the N35,000 wage award.

The arrears, they stress, are vital in easing the financial pressures caused by the rising cost of living.
The wage award, agreed with labour unions in 2023, was intended as a temporary measure to support workers during ongoing economic reforms.
While five months of the award have been partially paid in staggered tranches, employees are increasingly frustrated by delays in completing the remaining payments.
The Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have repeatedly urged the government to fulfil its commitments.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Dr Uche Anune criticised the government’s approach, stating that workers should not have to protest to receive what is owed.
Mr Joseph Edeh echoed this sentiment, describing the delay as undermining trust in the government. “They paid two months and then stopped. Why are we being treated this way? The remaining three months should be cleared immediately,” he said.
Miss Franca Ofili highlighted the impact on personal finances, stressing that the N35,000 could make a significant difference in workers’ daily lives.
Responding to these concerns, the Federal Government, through Mr Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General, reaffirmed its commitment to clearing the arrears.
Mokwa clarified that the payments would continue in tranches, depending on available funds, and that the process remains ongoing.
Civil servants emphasised that completing the wage award payments is critical not only for easing financial burdens but also for maintaining morale and confidence in the government’s labour commitments.

They urged swift action to prevent unrest and ensure continued trust among public sector employees.
