The AGN International Actors Day celebration will be held under the theme, “Actors Beyond the Screen: Impacting Communities, Transforming Lives,” highlighting the evolving role of actors as entertainers, role models, community builders and agents of positive change.
According to the guild, the annual observance provides an opportunity to recognise the dedication and creativity of actors while promoting their welfare, professional development and unity within the industry.
For Nollywood, the celebration carries particular significance as Nigerian actors have played a powerful role in projecting the country’s culture, identity and stories to audiences across the world.
Through film and television, the guild said, actors have helped showcase Nigeria’s heritage and creative talent while contributing to the wider creative economy, employment, tourism and investment.
The 2026 theme seeks to move the conversation beyond actors’ performances on screen and draw attention to the influence they wield through their public platforms and engagement with society.
The guild said actors increasingly have opportunities to use their visibility to support communities, inspire positive action and contribute to social development.
As part of the celebration, AGN has planned community service and outreach programmes, social networking engagements, actors’ hangouts, industry interactions, goodwill activities and other initiatives designed to strengthen professional relationships and promote actors’ welfare.
National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, commended Nigerian actors for their resilience, sacrifice and commitment to the development of Nollywood.
Yakubu said the progress of Nigeria’s film industry had been driven in significant measure by the talent and perseverance of its actors.
He also called on Nollywood guilds and associations, government institutions, corporate organisations, development partners and other stakeholders to support the celebration and contribute to efforts aimed at improving the welfare and professional development of actors.
The AGN president stressed that the event should be more than a ceremonial celebration.
He said International Actors Day should provide an opportunity to strengthen solidarity within the industry, develop partnerships, support communities and reinforce the contribution of the creative sector to Nigeria’s development.
The theme, he added, reflects the need to recognise the influence actors can have outside their professional roles, particularly through community engagement and social initiatives.
The guild’s emphasis on welfare also comes against the backdrop of wider discussions within Nigeria’s entertainment industry about the need for stronger professional structures, better working conditions and greater support for creative professionals.
For AGN, the 2026 celebration offers an opportunity to acknowledge those challenges while celebrating the people whose performances have helped make Nollywood a globally recognised creative industry.
The guild extended its appreciation to Nigerian actors at home and abroad, describing their contributions as valuable to Nigeria’s cultural influence and the international entertainment landscape.
As International Actors Day approaches, AGN is encouraging actors, industry stakeholders and the wider public to celebrate the profession not only for the stories it tells but also for the potential of those who tell them to make a meaningful difference in society.
