The Federal Government announces the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway will partially open to traffic in December 2025, marking a major infrastructure milestone

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that the first 47-kilometre section of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway will be opened to traffic between December 12 and 17, 2025.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, confirmed the development during an inspection tour of the highway on Sunday, November 23, 2025.

The 750-kilometre highway connects nine coastal states and forms a critical component of the federal road infrastructure network.

Umahi stated that both the government and the contractor are fully committed to completing the project.

“This job must be completed. We are here on the president’s directive, working for the people, to ensure that the carriageway is opened for public use by December,” he said.

The minister added that full commissioning of Section 1 and half of Section 2 is expected by April 2026, excluding bridge components in Section 2.

Umahi also addressed a recent legal dispute involving Stella Okengwu of Winhomes Global Services Limited, who claimed the highway’s route affected a residential development.

The Federal High Court dismissed the suit, ruling that Okengwu and Winhomes no longer had any proprietary interest in the land and lacked standing to pursue legal action.

“Crucially, documents filed by Mrs Okengwu herself tell a different story from the narrative circulated in the media. The court has exposed her claims as mendacious and unfounded,” Umahi said, urging the public to disregard misleading reports.

The partial opening of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway represents a major milestone in the federal government’s efforts to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth along Nigeria’s coastal regions.
