Ambassador Richard Mills departs U.S. Mission Nigeria, with Keith Heffern stepping in as acting head until further notice
Abassador Richard Mills concluded his tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria on Friday, January 16, 2026, marking the end of a year-and-a-half leadership at the U.S. Mission.

During his time in office, Mills spearheaded efforts to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the United States and Nigeria.
Following his departure, current Deputy Chief of Mission Keith Heffern has assumed the role of Charge d’Affaires, ad interim, leading the mission until a new ambassador is appointed.
Ambassador Mills’s tenure saw expanded collaboration on bilateral initiatives, including trade, security, and development programs, reinforcing the strategic partnership between both nations.
