The Nigerian international made his Spanish top-flight debut following a strong performance in the Copa del Rey, where he scored and assisted in a 5-0 victory over the same Betis side.
Real Betis winger Antony scored the only goal of the match in the 28th minute, handing Manuel Pellegrini’s team a narrow win.
Lookman started the match alongside Argentine striker Julián Álvarez and played 70 minutes, coming close to scoring when a header was ruled out for offside by the smallest of margins.
Despite the setback, Lookman remained positive about his performance and the experience.
Following the match, Lookman posted on X: “Not the result we wanted, but we stay positive. Very special moment making my debut in the Metropolitano. Aupa Atleti.”
Fans responded enthusiastically, praising his movement, skill, and contribution to the team even as they lamented the loss.
Atletico Madrid now turn their focus to the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg scheduled for 12 February, where Lookman is expected to play a crucial role as the club seeks to secure silverware.
