Nigeria onion production reaches 2.1 million tonnes yearly, boosting exports, rural livelihoods, and youth participation in agriculture

The National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria has reported that the country produces approximately 2.1 million metric tonnes of onions annually, cementing its status as Africa’s second-largest producer after Egypt.

Alhaji Aliyu Isah, the national president of the association, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on 10 February 2026.

Isah stated that the sector generates an estimated value of N1.17 trillion and contributes significantly to rural livelihoods and the national economy.

Nigerian onions are exported across West and Central Africa, and to select European markets, reflecting the growing international demand for the produce.

The association commended the Federal Government for providing improved seeds, fertilisers, and agrochemicals to farmers, noting that these interventions have stabilised production and market prices.

Partnerships with ministries and agencies have enhanced farmers’ training and access to modern agricultural practices.

“We are committed to building a strong, integrated onion value chain by fostering cooperation among farmers, marketers, processors, and exporters,” Isah said.

He added that collaborations with customs authorities and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council have improved trade corridors and streamlined logistics for processed onion exports.

Isah further encouraged young Nigerians to embrace agriculture, particularly onion farming, as a viable path for employment and wealth creation.

He highlighted that strategic initiatives aimed at scaling production and improving farmers’ welfare are central to the association’s 2026 agenda.

As president of the Regional Observatory Body of Onion in West and Central Africa, Isah emphasised that enhancing local production, processing, and international trade, while protecting farmers’ welfare, will position Nigeria to eventually lead Africa in onion production.
