Omah Lay Afrobeats industry division claims the Nigerian scene is split between Davido and Wizkid loyalists in a candid interview

Afrobeats singer Omah Stanley Didia, popularly known as Omah Lay, has described the Nigerian music industry as deeply divided along lines of loyalty to major stars, during a candid interview with American media outlet The Fader.

Speaking on the Omah Lay Afrobeats industry division, the “Soso” crooner said the scene often appears split between supporters of Davido and those aligned with Wizkid, suggesting that these informal camps influence how artistes and fans interact within the ecosystem.

Omah Lay explained that at one point he chose to distance himself from the so-called “Big 3” of Afrobeats, which include Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy.

He revealed that he unfollowed all three artistes on social media in 2024, stating that he felt the industry dynamics surrounding them had become outdated and no longer aligned with his perspective on the direction of Afrobeats.

He further noted that while the pioneers of the genre contributed significantly to its global rise, the current structure of the industry, in his view, reflects entrenched divisions that shape perceptions and affiliations among fans and artistes alike.

Omah Lay also spoke about his collaboration with Davido on the track “With You,” describing the experience as natural and positive.

According to him, the process allowed him to appreciate Davido’s personality, which he said contributed to a better working relationship between them.

In his remarks, the singer suggested that Davido faces criticism partly due to perceptions surrounding his privileged background, adding that the DMW boss remains driven and unconcerned with proving himself to others.

The comments add to ongoing conversations within the Afrobeats industry about rivalry, influence and the evolving dynamics among its leading figures as the genre continues to expand globally.
