A Delta police officer has been arrested after a viral video showed a handcuffed suspect being fatally shot in Effurun

An officer of the Nigeria Police Force has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a handcuffed suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, in an incident that has triggered widespread public outrage.

The arrest followed the circulation of a viral video on Tuesday showing a restrained man with his hands cuffed behind his back being shot by a police officer on a public street.

The footage, which has sparked renewed concern over extrajudicial killings, shows a police vehicle marked “Nigerian Police Force, Effurun Area Command, Delta State” at the scene.

In a statement, Delta Police spokesperson Bright Edafe confirmed that the officer involved, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Usman Nuhu, has been taken into custody and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.

He added that the officer will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for further action.

Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Placid also confirmed the development, describing the incident as a violation of operational regulations.

According to him, preliminary findings indicate that operatives responded to intelligence about a suspect allegedly linked to an illegal firearm.

Placid stated that the suspect was apprehended after being found attempting to send a parcel reportedly containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition.

However, he noted that during the process of taking the suspect into custody, the team leader discharged his weapon, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The police leadership said the officer and members of his team have been ordered to face disciplinary review, with possible prosecution depending on the outcome of investigations.

The Inspector-General of Police, according to the statement, extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be served. He also urged members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue.

The incident has reignited public debate over police conduct in Nigeria, coming several years after the nationwide #EndSARS protests against police brutality, which demanded an end to extrajudicial killings and abuse of power.

Authorities have reiterated that the police maintain a zero-tolerance policy for unlawful use of force and violations of human rights.
