Obidient Movement faction expels Peter Obi and Yunusa Tanko, announces rebrand and restructuring ahead of the 2027 general elections

A faction claiming control of the Obidient Movement has announced the expulsion of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Yunusa Tanko, alongside a declaration of a rebrand and internal restructuring ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group, which claims to represent a legitimate leadership structure within the movement, made the announcement as part of what it described as efforts to reposition itself for future political engagement.

According to the faction, the decision forms part of a broader restructuring process aimed at redefining the identity and direction of the Obidient Movement ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The announcement, however, has intensified uncertainty surrounding the structure and leadership of the movement, which emerged as a major political force during the 2023 general elections.

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has remained a central figure in the Obidient political base, which is largely made up of his supporters across Nigeria and in the diaspora.

The inclusion of Yunusa Tanko in the reported expulsion has also raised further questions, given his known association with Obi’s political structure and coordination of grassroots mobilisation efforts.

The faction further stated that it has commenced a formal rebranding exercise, suggesting a shift in ideology, structure and operational focus as it prepares for the 2027 elections.

Political observers note that the development may deepen existing divisions within the wider Obidient Movement, which has largely operated as a loose, youth driven political network rather than a formally registered party structure.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Peter Obi or Yunusa Tanko regarding the claims made by the faction.

The situation is expected to generate further debate within Nigeria’s political space as preparations gradually build towards the 2027 general elections.

No division would emerge in our efforts to consolidate towards upcoming elections. Obidient family should remain steadfast in pursuing our common goals. APC has inflicted deep injuries in Nigeria economy and in the safety of Nigerians. Let us remain focused and maintain our resilience towards making our candidates win all the elections.
