Ballon d’Or 2026 race heats up after PSG’s super cup win

PSG’s 2-1 Super Cup victory over Aston Villa has strengthened Ousmane Dembélé’s case, while Harry Kane remains a leading contender.

Ballon d’Or 2026 race heats up after PSG’s super cup win

SALZBURG, Austria, August 14, 2026: Harry Kane, Bayern Munich and England striker, remains at the top of the latest Ballon d’Or 2026 ranking, while Ousmane Dembélé, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Kylian Mbappé continue to mount a strong challenge after Paris Saint-Germain defeated Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

PSG’s victory at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg gave the Champions League holders their second consecutive UEFA Super Cup, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué scoring for the French side.

Aston Villa’s 17-year-old Brian Madjo briefly restored parity before Doué struck the decisive goal in the second half.

The latest result has added another compelling layer to a Ballon d’Or race that was already regarded as unusually open following the 2026 World Cup.

Kane’s position is built largely on his exceptional individual output and Bayern Munich’s domestic success.

His goal-scoring consistency has made him one of the strongest statistical candidates, although the final assessment will also consider the achievements of his closest rivals.

The England captain therefore enters the early stages of the new season with a valuable advantage, but the gap is anything but secure.

Dembélé remains arguably the most significant threat.

The French forward won the 2025 Ballon d’Or and was central to PSG’s Champions League triumph last season.

PSG’s latest European success only strengthens that argument.

The club became just the third side, after AC Milan and Real Madrid, to win the UEFA Super Cup in consecutive seasons.

Dembélé did not score against Aston Villa, but his contribution remained important.

His pass created the opportunity for Doué’s winning goal, further underlining his influence in a PSG side that continues to collect major trophies.

Doué, meanwhile, produced one of the night’s defining moments.

His 61st-minute finish was initially ruled out for offside before VAR intervened and confirmed the goal.

The 20-year-old’s performance could also fuel discussion about his own long-term Ballon d’Or prospects, although breaking into the leading five at this stage would require another exceptional campaign.

The World Cup has complicated the picture considerably.

Spain’s triumph has significantly elevated the claims of Yamal and Rodri. L’Équipe described the race as still wide open following the tournament, with Spain’s collective success giving both players a major platform.

Yamal enjoyed another outstanding season with Barcelona and became the youngest player to win both the European Championship and World Cup, according to L’Équipe.

The teenager’s influence for club and country keeps him firmly among the leading contenders.

Rodri has an equally compelling international case.

The Manchester City midfielder was named the World Cup’s best player after helping Spain secure the trophy, adding another major individual accolade to his résumé.

The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner is also benefiting from the weight attached to his role in Spain’s midfield, although injuries and a less dominant club campaign could affect his final standing.

Mbappé completes the current top five.

The Real Madrid forward did not lift a major club trophy during the campaign, but his individual numbers remain formidable.

Mbappé finished the World Cup as the tournament’s leading scorer with 10 goals, while also becoming France’s all-time leading goalscorer, according to L’Équipe.

His lack of major team silverware, however, remains the biggest weakness in an otherwise powerful individual case.

The PSG victory also produced one of the most memorable human-interest moments of the evening.

Madjo, making his competitive debut for Aston Villa, became the youngest scorer in UEFA Super Cup history when he equalised against PSG shortly before half-time.

The 17-year-old had previously faced uncertainty over his eligibility to play competitive football after FIFA regulations prevented his registration, before a successful appeal cleared the way for his debut.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and captain John McGinn praised Madjo’s performance despite the defeat, with the teenager’s physical presence and composure against European champions immediately attracting attention.

PSG ultimately had the final say.

Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute with an individual effort before Madjo responded for Villa. Doué then restored PSG’s advantage in the 61st minute, with the goal surviving a VAR review.

The result means Luis Enrique’s PSG have continued their remarkable trophy-winning run, with the Super Cup becoming another piece of silverware in a period of extraordinary European dominance.

Reuters noted that the victory represented Enrique’s 13th trophy since taking charge of the club in 2023.

For the Ballon d’Or contenders, however, the Super Cup is only the beginning.

Kane’s scoring numbers give him a formidable foundation, while Dembélé has the advantage of playing for a PSG side that continues to dominate European competition.

Yamal and Rodri have the powerful benefit of World Cup glory, while Mbappé can point to exceptional individual statistics despite a trophy-light club season.

The race is therefore far from settled.

The next months of domestic competition, European football and individual performances could dramatically reshape the standings before the final Ballon d’Or voting.

For now, Kane remains the man at the summit, but PSG’s latest triumph has ensured that Dembélé and his European-winning teammates are refusing to let him enjoy the view alone.
