Melaye sparks fresh debate over Obi’s 2027 chances

The former senator says Peter Obi must overcome a regional image to win nationally

Melaye sparks fresh debate over Obi’s 2027 chances

Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye challenged Peter Obi’s prospects in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, arguing during a podcast appearance that the former Anambra State governor must overcome what Melaye described as a regional political identity to win nationwide.

Speaking on the KAA Truths podcast, Melaye contrasted Obi’s political profile with that of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whom he described as a nationalist and the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

“Atiku is a nationalist. Obi is a regional champion. It may sound awkward. It may sound offensive but Obi is a good man and he’s my friend,” Melaye said.

The former lawmaker argued that Nigeria’s political structure requires a presidential candidate to build support beyond a particular geographical base.

“He’s a regional champion and no regional champion in this country will ever be president,” Melaye added.

His comments come as Nigeria’s opposition landscape continues to undergo significant realignment ahead of the 2027 election.

Obi left the ADC-led opposition arrangement in May 2026 alongside Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and subsequently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.

The move followed disagreements within the broader opposition coalition.

It was reported at the time that the departures weakened an effort to unite major opposition figures behind a single platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Obi later secured the NDC presidential ticket. The party’s national convention in Abuja ratified his candidacy on May 30, while Obi announced former Kano State governor Kwankwaso as his running mate.

The development has given Obi a fresh platform for his second attempt at the presidency.

He finished third in the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party and attracted a substantial youth following through the Obidient movement.

Melaye, however, believes electoral popularity in one region is not sufficient to secure the presidency.

To illustrate his argument, Melaye referred to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures, whose presidential campaigns were strongly associated with the South-West.

“Awolowo, fantastic man, brilliant, exquisite, cosmopolitan, leader par excellence but he was a regional champion,” Melaye said.

“He contested for the presidency of this country, he could only win convincingly only in the Southwest, because he’s not a nationalist in that regard of politics.”

Melaye’s assessment is ultimately a political argument rather than an electoral certainty.

Obi’s supporters have consistently presented his appeal as national, pointing to the support he received outside the South-East during the 2023 election.

The 2023 results also showed that Obi won Lagos State, a major political and commercial centre outside his home region, while recording significant support in several other parts of the country.

His campaign also developed a particularly strong following among younger voters.

His national reach will nevertheless be tested again in 2027, when the presidential contest is expected to feature several major political blocs and personalities.

Melaye’s own position has also attracted attention because of his long-standing support for Atiku.

In June, he denied reports that he had switched allegiance from Atiku to Obi, describing a circulating video purporting to show such an endorsement as AI-generated.

The former senator has previously spoken positively about the ADC and its potential to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2027.

His latest remarks therefore add another layer to the increasingly competitive opposition debate over which candidate can assemble a genuinely nationwide coalition.

With the 2027 election still ahead, the central question for Obi and other opposition contenders will be whether their existing regional strengths can be converted into broader national support.

For now, Melaye has offered a striking assessment of that challenge, insisting that presidential ambition alone will not be enough without a political coalition capable of crossing Nigeria’s regional lines.
