US Embassy suspends routine nonimmigrant visa services in Nigeria

The change affects tourist, business and petition-based applications, as the US redirects routine visa processing to regional hubs.

The United States Department of State has realigned routine visa services from the US Embassy in Abuja to regional processing hubs, affecting Nigerians seeking tourist, business and other routine nonimmigrant visas.

The change took effect on 1 August 2026 as part of a wider restructuring of US visa operations across Africa. The Department of State says applicants from affected countries must now schedule appointments at designated processing locations.

The development has caused concern among Nigerian applicants, particularly those who had expected to attend visa interviews in Abuja.

However, the US government describes the measure as a realignment, rather than the closure of the embassy or a blanket cancellation of visa services.

The US Embassy in Abuja remains open and continues to provide other consular and diplomatic services.

The State Department specifically says the realignment of routine visa processing does not change the operating status of affected embassies and consulates.

Under the new arrangement, routine visa services previously handled in Abuja are being directed to regional hubs.

Lagos is among the US posts designated to provide routine visa services in Africa. Other hubs include Accra, Abidjan, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Dakar and Cape Town.

The affected services include tourist and business-related nonimmigrant visas, as well as petition-based nonimmigrant visas.

The restructuring also covers several categories of immigrant visas, including immediate-relative, family-preference and employment-based applications.

For Nigerians planning to apply, the change means the location of the interview is now particularly important.

The US Department of State says citizens and residents of countries affected by the realignment must schedule appointments and pay the required visa fee at the appropriate designated processing post.

Applicants who already had appointments at a post where routine services were being discontinued were advised to check their email for specific instructions from the US authorities.

The development is part of a broader US policy affecting several African countries.

The State Department says the regional-hub model is intended to strengthen security screening and vetting while improving the efficiency of visa operations and the allocation of government resources.

The change should also be distinguished from the separate US visa restrictions affecting Nigerian nationals.

Since January 2026, the United States has partially suspended visa issuance to Nigerians for B-1/B-2 visitor visas and F, M and J student and exchange categories under Presidential Proclamation 10998, subject to stated exceptions.

Nigeria is also among the countries subject to a US visa-bond requirement, with the requirement listed as effective from 21 January 2026.

For applicants, therefore, the latest realignment does not by itself mean that every Nigerian has been barred from obtaining a US visa.

Rather, it changes where routine visa processing is conducted and operates alongside existing US visa restrictions and requirements.

The State Department has also directed nonimmigrant applicants generally to seek interviews in their country of nationality or residence, while nationals of countries without routine nonimmigrant operations are directed to designated processing posts.

Importantly, the realignment does not invalidate visas that have already been issued. The State Department says currently valid visas are not affected by the restructuring.

Nigerians with pending applications or planned travel should therefore check the latest instructions from the US Embassy and Department of State before paying fees, booking appointments or making travel arrangements.

The shift marks a significant change in how Nigerians access US routine visa services, but it is part of a wider regional restructuring rather than the complete suspension of US consular operations in Nigeria.
