Jude Chiemeka, Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Limited, has assumed the presidency of the African Securities Exchanges Association, effective September 30, 2026, succeeding Pierre Célestin Rwabukumba, Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Stock Exchange.

The appointment places Chiemeka at the helm of an organisation focused on strengthening cooperation among African securities exchanges at a time when market integration, technology and cross-border investment are becoming increasingly important to the continent’s capital markets.

Chiemeka, who also chairs the West African Capital Markets Integration Council, brings more than 30 years of experience across securities trading, asset management, investment banking and financial product development.

His new role comes with a broad agenda for ASEA, including efforts to improve market liquidity, strengthen regional connectivity, accelerate technology adoption and encourage greater movement of capital across African markets.

Reacting to the appointment, Chiemeka described the opportunity as a privilege and linked his presidency to the wider need for stronger capital-market cooperation across Africa.

“It is a privilege to lead the African Securities Exchanges Association at a time when capital market integration and technology-driven innovation are paramount to unlocking Africa’s economic potential.”

Chiemeka said ASEA would build on the work of his predecessor by advocating stronger frameworks for cross-border investment, deeper liquidity pools and sustainable finance initiatives across member exchanges.

Under the new presidency, ASEA plans to facilitate greater inter-exchange trading and cross-listing between African jurisdictions.

The objective is to make it easier for investors and market participants to access opportunities beyond their domestic exchanges.

Digital innovation is another central part of the agenda.

ASEA is expected to encourage the adoption of financial technology and modern market infrastructure to improve operational efficiency and widen access to capital markets, including among retail investors.

The association will also seek to improve capital mobility by strengthening relationships with global institutional investors while encouraging greater participation by local investors.

Sustainable finance is another priority, with plans to promote greater alignment of environmental, social and governance frameworks and support green bond listings across member exchanges.

For Nigeria, Chiemeka’s appointment adds another regional leadership responsibility to his existing role as chairman of WACMIC, an initiative established to advance integration and harmonisation within West Africa’s capital markets.

WACMIC’s framework includes measures designed to facilitate cross-border trading and broader participation by market intermediaries across the region.

Chiemeka has previously been involved in regional capital-market initiatives, including ASEA activities.

His professional background also includes senior leadership at United Capital Securities and the Nigerian Exchange, alongside experience spanning investment banking, securities trading and asset management.

The leadership transition follows the tenure of Rwabukumba, who was recognised for efforts to bring African exchanges closer together during his time as ASEA president.

In his outgoing remarks, Rwabukumba congratulated Chiemeka and pointed to his experience in both the Nigerian market and WACMIC.

“Leading ASEA has been an honour, and I am proud of the progress we have made in bringing African exchanges closer together.”

Rwabukumba added that Chiemeka’s experience positioned him to guide the association into its next phase.

The appointment also comes as African exchanges continue to explore ways of addressing fragmented capital markets, limited liquidity and barriers to cross-border investment.

ASEA serves as a platform for cooperation among securities exchanges across the continent, with its activities centred on information sharing, market development and stronger capital-market infrastructure.

Chiemeka’s presidency is therefore expected to place particular emphasis on turning regional cooperation into more practical market connections, including cross-listings, inter-exchange trading and technology-enabled access.

The success of those initiatives will depend on cooperation among individual exchanges, regulators, market intermediaries and investors across different jurisdictions.

Differences in regulation, market infrastructure and investor participation remain important considerations for deeper continental integration.

For Chiemeka, the immediate challenge will be to build on ASEA’s existing foundation while advancing an agenda that combines integration with technological development and sustainable finance.

The appointment nevertheless represents a notable regional leadership role for Nigeria’s capital-market sector and gives the NGX chief a broader platform from which to contribute to efforts aimed at creating a more connected African investment environment.
