Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has reflected on a period in Nigeria’s economic history when the country possessed significant financial strength.
In a recent video circulating online, Dangote said Nigeria once provided financial assistance to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. He also claimed the country wrote off £211 million in debt owed by the United Kingdom.
Dangote further recalled that Nigeria’s national budget in 1975 stood at ₦30 billion, which he said was equivalent to £30 billion or about $47 billion at the time.
“Can you imagine if we kept up that growth?” he asked, adding: “Imagine where Nigeria would be today if we had sustained our growth since 1975.”
The comments have sparked discussion about Nigeria’s economic trajectory over the past five decades.
