FG commissions four substations, adds 544MW in Kano

The Federal Government has commissioned four transmission substations in Kano State, adding 544 megawatts (MW) of wheeling capacity to the power grid in a move aimed at improving electricity supply to industrial, commercial and residential areas.

The projects were delivered through the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in partnership with the Kano State Government.

The substations are located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi. The new infrastructure is expected to ease pressure on overloaded substations, improve bulk electricity transmission and create additional capacity to meet previously unmet demand.

At Walalambe, a new substation with two 40-megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformers provides 80MW of capacity.

Kumbotso has received additional transformer capacity at the 330-kilovolt level, while Dakata and Dan-Agundi have each gained an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132-kilovolt level.

The projects are expected to strengthen electricity supply across several parts of Kano, particularly areas supporting manufacturing, trade and other economic activities.

At Walalambe, six outgoing feeders are designed to support electricity supply to the Tokarawa Industrial Area, the Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and neighbouring communities.

One of the notable developments is the reconnection of Lee Group, a major industrial enterprise, to the national grid after more than 30 years of operating off-grid.

The improved transmission infrastructure is also expected to strengthen supply to businesses and households by reducing pressure on existing facilities and creating more room to accommodate electricity demand.

At Dan-Agundi, the project restores substantial capacity to a substation previously damaged by fire. The facility serves Kano’s ancient town, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.

The additional capacity is expected to support commercial activities, manufacturing and small businesses, with potential benefits for employment and household welfare.

The Federal Government said the investments reflected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and efforts to strengthen the power sector as a foundation for national development.

Improved transmission infrastructure is a key part of expanding the electricity available for distribution to homes and businesses, although the actual supply consumers receive also depends on generation, distribution networks and other operational factors.

The four projects are expected to provide stronger transmission infrastructure for Kano State, supporting its industrial and commercial activities while creating additional capacity to accommodate future electricity demand.
