‘NIN scam’ Do not pay money for enrolment form, FG warns Nigerians

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians not to patronise fraudsters claiming to sell the National Identity Number (NIN) enrolment form.

The agency in a disclaimer on Monday, signed by Aliyu Aziz, director-general of NIMC, said it has not authorised the sale of NIN enrolment forms.

NIMC in a tweet stated that unscrupulous persons are parading themselves as its agents to extort money from members of the public.

NIMC said:

“The attention of Management of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has been drawn to the activities of certain unscrupulous persons parading themselves as agents and consultants of the NIMC and claims to having the capacity to operate and facilitates the engagement of companies/agents under the ongoing National Identification Number (NIN) Enrolment Project.”

The commission said NIN enrolment is free and not for sale, noting that it has not engaged any person, company, or organisation to charge Nigerians for enrolment.

However, the agency had authorized Nigerian telecommunications companies to engage in the NIN registration exercise in their retail outlets across the country.

Meanwhile, the federal government has given respite to many Nigerians over the ongoing NIN and Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) integration exercise.

Given the challenges being encountered, the government has extended the exercise by eight weeks.

Punch reported that this was announced by the director, public affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission, Ikechukwu Adinde.

In another report, NIMC has said that 56.18 million National Identification Numbers (NIN) have been collected by telecommunication companies.

The Cable reports that the figure is higher than the 47.8 million NIN collected as of January 18.
