The clarification was made by Col Rebecca Heyse, Director of Public Affairs at AFRICOM, during a discussion on an X Space session on Tuesday, where she addressed questions surrounding the nature of US military engagement in Nigeria.
Col Rebecca Heyse explained that AFRICOM Confirms US Presence Nigeria Invited is rooted in a structured partnership between both nations, adding that cooperation is governed by agreed frameworks rather than unilateral deployment.
According to her, US-Nigeria military cooperation operates under the Joint Working Group framework, which ensures that all activities are conducted with the consent and participation of both governments.
She emphasised that the arrangement is voluntary and built on respect for Nigeria’s independence, stressing that US forces only operate in the country when formally invited.
“Our operations and cooperation with Nigeria are based on respect for Nigerian sovereignty. We only operate with their invitation and under the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group framework,” Heyse said.
She further noted that the United States remains committed to the partnership for as long as both countries continue to share common security interests and find the collaboration beneficial.
The AFRICOM Confirms US Presence Nigeria Invited statement comes amid ongoing discussions about foreign military partnerships in Africa, where questions of sovereignty and strategic cooperation often attract public attention.
Analysts say the clarification highlights a broader diplomatic effort to reinforce transparency in US military engagement across the continent.
