Davido discusses plans to buy back his music masters from Sony and secure royalty earnings for his children after retirement

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed plans to buy back the rights to his music masters from his foreign record label, Sony Music, before retiring from the music industry.

The singer made the disclosure during an episode of The Long Form podcast, where he discussed ownership, legacy, and long-term financial planning in the music business.

Davido emphasised that control of intellectual property remains one of the most important aspects of a sustainable music career.

He explained that while he currently has a favourable contract, his long-term goal is to regain full ownership of his music catalogue.

According to him, owning his masters would allow him to structure future earnings in a way that benefits his children even after he exits the industry.

In his words, he said he plans to recover his masters from Sony Music and ensure that his children continue to receive royalties from his work long after his retirement.

The singer noted that he intends to assign portions of his music catalogue to his children so they can continue to earn from it independently.

Davido also stressed that many artists often overlook the business side of music, warning that ownership is just as important as fame and success.

He added that understanding contracts and long-term rights is essential for any serious musician who wants to build lasting wealth.

The discussion has sparked renewed conversations about music ownership and artist rights within the global entertainment industry.
